I think it’s very important to call people out when they say things that are offensive or problematic, but it’s also important to do it in a respectful and calm manner.
I really appreciate it when I say something stupid or ignorant and someone says something, because it causes me to reconsider and rethink and become a somewhat better person.
For instance, when Jennifer Lawrence’s personal photos were stolen and put on the Internet, I made a post saying something like, “ayy, her body looks great,” because, yes, I had looked at one of them. Many people responded to this and while a good chunk of them were pretty angry and kind of attack-y, I learned that, yeah, just looking at the photos is perpetuating the crime and saying that she looks good goes on to support the fact that it’s not a big deal that her privacy was severely invaded. But it is a huge deal! And without people addressing me, I wouldn’t have learned and would have gone on thinking it wasn’t a big deal.
I don’t know what the point of this is, but it’s just nice to instigate a dialogue with someone who fucked up instead of having a one-way screaming match.
